About Us
Front sign of the Erwarton Queens Head A friendly and traditional local pub with restaurant

The Queens Head is situated in Erwarton, a quaint village on the Shotley Peninsula, not far from the Orwell Bridge.

Bordered by the rivers Owell and Stour, the Shotley Peninsula is excellent walking country through the footpaths that run throughout the fields. Cyclists will also be equally at home on the many country lanes that allow you to travel gracefully through the miles of quiet and peaceful countryside.

Our bar is found in the original part of our building - with real character hiding amongst the beams that have stood proud for hundreds of years it really is the perfect place to come and relax.

Alongside the original old building we have a newer restaurant area with tables for groups of all sizes.

Why not come and join us for a drink or a delicious meal from our menu with options for everyone. We are open Monday - Saturday throughout the day/evening and also for Sunday lunch.

HISTORY

This pub is currently owned by Suffolk business man and farmer James Buckle whose interests include Boyton Hall equine centre. The pub has been refurbished and upgraded to reflect the high standards found in both of his other Suffolk establishments, the most recently acquired Lindsey Rose and the hotel and restaurant, The Bildeston Crown. The Erwarton Queen's Head has been in the Buckle family for over twenty years and was originally purchased by James's father due to its close proximity to his boat's mooring on the Stour. The entire Erwarton coastline is designated as heritage coast and the pub enjoys splendid views over the estuary.

The pub owes its name to the strong local connections with Henry VIII's unlucky second queen, Anne Boleyn. In her younger years, Anne spent some time at Arwarton Hall, (now Erwarton), and before her death it is believed she stated that her heart will always be in Arwarton. The story goes that after she was beheaded, Sir Philip Parker of Arwarton, removed her heart and buried it in a heart shaped tin in the wall of Arwarton church. A few hundred years later the tin was discovered, and re-buried under the Cornwallis's slab below the organ in the church where it remains to this day.

MANAGEMENT

The Queen's Head is now managed by William Dixon, who has been in the pub trade as both owner and manager for over ten years. He also shares James Buckles interest in horses and at one time held an amateur jockey's license.

William has recently employed a new chef Daniel Smallbone previously of the Suffolk Food Hall. They are working together on the current menu to provide a selection of locally sourced home cooked food (see our sample menu) including daily specials on our blackboard. Daniel is also working to provide a children's menu which retains the high quality of food offered on our main menu

The Queen's Head has sponsored the local darts team and William is committed to re-establishing the pub as part of the local community both with a warm welcome and excellent food.
